Gujarat’s Dominance and Maharashtra’s Rise: Unraveling India’s Toll Collection Tale

Toll collection on National Highways in India has undergone a transformative shift in recent years, primarily due to the widespread implementation of FASTag. In the previous fiscal year, a staggering Rs 48,028.22 crore was collected nationwide, showcasing the impact of this innovative technology.

However, the latest data for the year 2022-23 unveils a fascinating hierarchy among the states in terms of toll collection. Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan have emerged as the top two states, with collections of Rs 5,583.43 crore and Rs 5,084.50 crore, respectively. Remarkably, Maharashtra, despite boasting the largest national highway network, occupies the third position with a toll collection of Rs 4,660.21 crore on its national highways.

When these figures are coupled with Gujarat’s contribution of Rs 4,518.96 crore and Tamil Nadu’s Rs 3,817.48 crore, it becomes evident that these five states collectively account for nearly half of the total toll collected across India. What’s even more interesting is that these very states have consistently held the top five positions in toll collection for the past five years. The only noteworthy change this year is Maharashtra’s ascent to the third spot, while Gujarat had outperformed in previous years.

Gujarat, in particular, boasts the toll plaza with the highest collection across India, located at the L&T Vadodara toll plaza, which impressively collected Rs 455.94 crore during the 2022-23 period. Among the top 100 toll plazas in the nation, at least 14 are situated in Gujarat, contributing to nearly 70 percent of the state’s total toll collection. Altogether, these 14 toll plazas in Gujarat managed to generate an impressive Rs 3,045.96 crore in toll revenue.

These statistics underscore the evolving landscape of toll collection in India, influenced significantly by the adoption of FASTag and the consistent performance of certain key states in the nation.
