In a landmark decision, the Maharashtra State government has approved a comprehensive academic fee waiver for girls belonging to families with an annual income of 8 lakh or less. The Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Chandrakant Patil, announced this initiative during the Board of Vice-Chancellors meeting, emphasizing the state’s commitment to promoting higher education for girls.
Encouraging Admissions and Campaigns:
The proposal aims to incentivize universities to increase the enrollment of girls in various higher education courses. Vice-Chancellors are directed to conduct awareness campaigns to promote this initiative and ensure its successful implementation.
Transition to 100% Academic Fee Waiver:
Previously, there was a 50% academic fee waiver for girls in the specified income category. The new decision elevates this waiver to a full 100%, making higher education more accessible to a wider demographic.
Implementation and Scope:
Chandrakant Patil, while addressing the Board of Vice-Chancellors, declared that the fee waiver policy would be effective from June 2024 and would cover nearly 800 courses. This move is expected to significantly impact the educational landscape, particularly for girls hailing from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Call for Timely Results:
In addition to the fee waiver announcement, the Governor of Maharashtra urged all universities to declare results on time. Emphasizing the importance of timely results, he highlighted that delays could adversely affect students’ academic years and job opportunities.

The Governor also directed universities to increase their participation in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), reinforcing the commitment to maintaining high educational standards.
