Electricity Sales for EVs Triple in Maharashtra, Reflecting Rapid Growth

Maharashtra’s surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption is evident as the sale of electricity for EVs in the state has witnessed a remarkable threefold increase over a span of ten months, according to the Chairman and Managing Director of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), Lokesh Chandra.

From 4.56 million units of electricity sold for EVs in September 2022, the figure has surged to an impressive 14.44 million units in July 2023. This swift rise in electricity consumption for EVs highlights the growing traction of electric mobility within the state.

In line with the increased electricity demand for EVs, the number of electric vehicles on Maharashtra’s roads has been rapidly climbing. In 2018, a total of 4,643 EVs were sold in the state. By 2022, this number had leaped to 1,89,698 EVs. As of March 31, 2023, Maharashtra’s streets were home to 2,98,838 EVs, with two-wheelers comprising a significant portion of nearly 2.5 lakh units.

Notably, the state’s commitment to electric mobility is evident in the expansion of electric bus infrastructure. While a mere four electric buses were registered in 2018, this number surged to 336 in 2022. As of March 2023, Maharashtra proudly hosted a total of 1,399 electric buses, underscoring the region’s substantial strides towards eco-friendly public transportation.

This impressive growth in both EV adoption and supporting infrastructure showcases Maharashtra’s determination to embrace sustainable mobility solutions. As the momentum for electric mobility continues to build, the state’s efforts are setting a positive example for the rest of the nation to follow, aligning with global environmental goals and contributing to a greener future.
