US State Department Confident of Advanced Drone Delivery to India in Months

In a significant development, the US State Department has expressed confidence in the delivery of advanced drones to India within the next few months, marking a crucial step in enhancing the bilateral relationship between the two nations. The announcement comes as the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) delivered the necessary certification to the US Congress, notifying them of the proposed sale.

US State Department spokesperson Mathew Miller addressed the media, describing the relationship with India as “one of the most consequential.” While he refrained from providing an exact timeline for the delivery, Miller highlighted that discussions on the matter would take place with the Government of India in the coming months.

The $3.99 billion agreement involves the sale of 31 MQ-9B SkyGuardian aircraft, offering India outright ownership and a remarkable 16-fold increase in the number of aircraft compared to their current lease of two MQ-9A aircraft. The package also includes ammunition, spare components, and spare engines, contributing to India’s enhanced maritime security and maritime domain awareness capability.

However, the deal faces a hurdle in the form of Congressional approval, with reports suggesting that some members are opposed to selling American military hardware to India until the country addresses concerns related to the alleged attempt to murder Khalistan activist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Pannun, declared a terrorist by India, leads the banned organization Sikhs For Justice.

Once Congress approves the Rs 32,000 crore agreement, it will proceed to the US President for final ratification, following the established US process. The outcome of Congressional deliberations will play a crucial role in determining the fate of this significant defense deal and the further strengthening of ties between the United States and India.
