Singapore Recalls Everest Fish Curry Masala Over Contamination

Singapore has issued a recall for Everest Fish Curry Masala, an imported product from India, following the discovery of elevated levels of ethylene oxide, a chemical deemed unfit for human consumption.

The Contamination Concern: The recall was prompted by findings from the Centre for Food Safety in Hong Kong, which detected the presence of ethylene oxide in the product exceeding permissible limits. While ethylene oxide is permitted for sterilizing spices in Singapore, the levels detected in the masala pose a potential health risk to consumers.

Recall Initiated: Importer SP Muthiah & Sons Pte. Ltd. has been directed by the Singapore Food Agency to initiate the recall process promptly. Ethylene oxide, strictly prohibited in food items due to its potential health hazards, necessitated the recall to prevent further consumption of the contaminated product.

Health Advisory: Although ethylene oxide is commonly used as a pesticide, its presence above certain thresholds in food products raises significant health concerns. The Singapore Food Agency has advised consumers who have consumed the affected product and harbor health concerns to seek medical advice promptly. Additionally, consumers are urged to contact their point of purchase for further inquiries and guidance.

Manufacturer Response: As of now, Everest, the manufacturer of the recalled product, has not issued any official statement regarding the contamination or subsequent recall.
