Operation Ajay: Indian Citizens Rescued from Israel in First Charter Flight

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has left many Indian citizens stranded in a volatile region. To address this crisis, the Indian government launched “Operation Ajay” to repatriate its citizens from Israel. The first charter flight under this operation arrived in New Delhi on Friday, bringing 212 Indian nationals, including an infant, safely back home. The passengers were chosen on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis. Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekar was present at the airport to receive the returning citizens.

This operation marks a critical response to the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict that has resulted in extensive casualties and displacement. Air India and other airlines suspended all commercial operations to and from Israel as the war began, making it essential to launch special chartered flights and naval support for the evacuation.

Approximately 18,000 Indians reside in Israel, including students, professionals, and traders. To ensure the safety and well-being of its nationals abroad, the Ministry of External Affairs has established a 24-hour control room in New Delhi to closely monitor the situation. The government is committed to bringing its citizens back safely.

The Israel-Hamas conflict, which has now entered its seventh day, has led to over 2,800 casualties and the displacement of 423,000 people. The conflict ignited when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, citing a dispute over the Al-Aqsa Mosque, a site sacred to both Muslims and Jews. In response, Israel has conducted airstrikes, and there are preparations for a possible ground operation in Gaza.
