North Korea Tests ‘Haeil-5-23’: Underwater Nuclear Weapon System Amidst Regional Tensions

In the latest development amid escalating tensions, North Korea announced on Friday that it had successfully tested an “underwater nuclear weapon system” named ‘Haeil-5-23.’ The move is claimed to be a response to joint naval exercises conducted by the United States, South Korea, and Japan, which included the presence of a US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

Provocation Amid Naval Drills

According to a statement from North Korea’s defense ministry, the joint naval exercises were deemed a serious threat to the security of the North. In response, Pyongyang conducted a crucial test of its underwater nuclear weapon system in the East Sea of Korea.

Unveiling ‘Haeil-5-23’

The exact date of the test was not disclosed, but the defense ministry emphasized that the development of ‘Haeil-5-23’ was underway. This underwater nuclear weapon system is distinct from the previously mentioned underwater nuclear attack drone, which Pyongyang claimed could unleash a “radioactive tsunami.”

Escalating Regional Tensions

Recent joint naval drills were a response to North Korea’s launch of a hypersonic missile, and the maritime exercises involved nine warships, including the USS Carl Vinson. North Korea accused the drills of destabilizing the regional situation and threatening its security.

Response to Naval Maneuvers

Pyongyang’s defense ministry spokesman stated that the underwater nuclear test ensures the enhancement of the country’s “underwater nuke-based countering posture” and will continue to deter what it perceives as hostile military maneuvers by the navies of the US and its allies.

Analyst Perspectives

Analysts have questioned the existence of such advanced weaponry in North Korea’s arsenal. Some view the announcement as a sign of the deployment of Haeil drones to the navy fleets. While the exact capabilities remain uncertain, experts suggest that the weapon is still in a developing stage and may not pose an immediate significant threat.
