Indian Telecom Secretary’s US Visit Formalises US-India OpenRAN Acceleration Roadmap

In a groundbreaking development, the Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India formalized the ‘US-India OpenRAN Acceleration Roadmap’ during a visit to the United States. This strategic move aims to enhance collaboration and interoperability for the scaled deployment of OpenRAN products, fostering global technological advancement in Next Generation Communication Technologies.

The Ministry of Communications announced the significant agreement, which resulted from the DoT Secretary’s meeting with Ann Neuberger, the Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) of the USA. The ‘US-India OpenRAN Acceleration Roadmap’ aligns with India’s commitment to technological prowess and global collaboration, marking a pivotal step in advancing Next Generation Communication Technologies.

US-India OpenRAN Acceleration Roadmap Unveiled

“Both sides concurred on joint efforts in Next Generation Communication Technologies, marking a significant stride towards global technological advancement,” stated the Ministry of Communications. The formalization of the agreement took place during the Secretary’s visit to the United States, which commenced on January 12, 2024. The accord addresses critical aspects of India’s technological capabilities and emphasizes international collaboration, with the ministry providing detailed insights into the journey.

Keynote at PanIIT 2024

As part of the visit, the DoT Secretary delivered a keynote address on ‘Technology Diplomacy: Navigating the Geopolitical Landscape’ at the PanIIT 2024 event. The Ministry highlighted the signing of a Joint Work Plan with PanIIT USA, fostering expertise exchange for Indian research projects and guiding startups toward the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Quantum Communications Collaboration

In a bid to strengthen India’s self-reliance in Quantum Communications, the Secretary visited the University of Chicago and explored potential collaborations in Quantum Networks and Quantum Teleportation. The objective is to elevate research and development, foster innovation, and fortify the startup ecosystem in Quantum Communications within India.

World Bank Discussions on Digital Initiatives

During engagements with World Bank delegates, the Telecom Secretary participated in discussions focusing on India’s initiatives in Digital Public Infrastructure, Cell Broadcast Technology, and the promotion of the startup ecosystem. The World Bank was invited to join the ‘AI for Good’ effort of ITU/UN, with a specific focus on the South Asian and African regions.

The Ministry emphasized that this visit exemplifies the Department of Telecommunications’ dedication to technological excellence, international collaboration, and self-reliance. It aligns seamlessly with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, showcasing India’s commitment to leading the way in global technological advancements.
