India-Maldives Diplomatic Row Impacts Tourism: China Surpasses India as Top Visitor

As diplomatic tensions between India and the Maldives escalate, the repercussions are felt strongly in the tourism sector. Recent data from the Maldives tourism ministry reveals a significant 33% decrease in Indian tourists, accompanied by a noteworthy rise in Chinese visitors. This shift marks a pivotal moment in the dynamics of the Maldives tourism industry.

A report from Male-based Adhadhu sheds light on the drastic decline in Indian tourist numbers. In March 2023, the Maldives welcomed over 41,000 Indian tourists. However, this figure plummeted to just 27,224 in March 2024, attributing the decline to the Indian government’s tourism campaign, encouraging citizens to explore the Lakshadweep islands instead.

India, previously the second-largest source of tourism for the Maldives with a 10% market share, now finds itself in the sixth position with a diminished 6% market share due to the strained diplomatic relations.

Meanwhile, China has experienced a surge in tourist arrivals, solidifying its position as the top visiting country for the Maldives. The island nation witnessed a total of 217,394 tourists in February 2024, with over 34,600 arrivals from China. The diplomatic row has thus shifted the balance, altering the landscape of the Maldives’ tourism market.

The decline in Indian tourists is linked to the appointment of President Mohamed Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance. President Muizzu’s order to remove Indian military personnel from the Maldives further strained relations. The situation worsened when Maldivian ministers made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media, sparking global outrage.

President Muizzu’s subsequent visit to China, just a week after the controversial comments, emphasized the intent to strengthen ties with China. The president urged China to revitalize its tourism market in the Maldives, highlighting the nation’s economic dependence on Chinese tourism.

As India grapples with a diminishing role in the Maldives tourism landscape, China emerges as the dominant force, aligning with President Muizzu’s vision to regain China’s position as the number one market for Maldives tourism.
