Global Changes in Student Visa Rules: Impact on International Education

As the global landscape for higher education evolves, nations with prominent international student hubs are adjusting their immigration policies to address challenges arising from increased student influx. Countries such as the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, and France have recently introduced amendments to their student visa rules, impacting the aspirations of students worldwide.

Australia: Stricter English Proficiency Requirements

Australia, a top choice for Indian students, has experienced a surge in enrollment over the past years. In response, the Australian government has heightened the English proficiency requirements for international students. The required IELTS score for a temporary visa has been raised from 6.0 to 6.5, and for a student visa, it has increased from 5.5 to 6.0.

United Kingdom: Shift in Sponsored Study Visas and Family Relocation Policies

The UK has witnessed a notable 54 percent increase in sponsored study visas granted to Indian students. Noteworthy changes include the prohibition of international students bringing their families to the UK. Students must pursue a postgraduate degree to relocate their families, and switching from a student visa to a work visa is now conditional on completing their studies. Additionally, the visa cost has been raised to Rs 51,787.

Canada: Enhanced Verification Process and Financial Requirements

Canada is witnessing a historic surge in its student population, prompting the government to introduce stricter measures. Post Secondary Nominated Learning Institutes are now required to confirm each applicant’s acceptance directly with the IRCC. Furthermore, the minimum financial requirement for international students residing in Canada has increased from $10,000 to $20,635 as of January 1, 2024.

France: Extended Post-Study Visa Duration

France, a top Schengen destination for Indians, has extended its two-year post-study visa to five years. Students who have completed at least one semester for a master’s degree or higher can now apply for a five-year short-term Schengen visa and seek employment.

Ireland and Italy: Longer Post-Study Stay Options

Ireland now offers a two-year post-study visa, allowing international students to stay for two years after completing their master’s degrees, while PhD holders can stay for three years. In Italy, Indian students studying for degrees can extend their stay by a full year.

United States: Stringent Visa Application Process

The United States, having implemented modifications on November 27, has declared new regulations to reduce student immigration fraud. Students applying for F, M, or J student visas are urged to use accurate passport information for appointments and profiles, as errors can lead to visa application rejections.

These changes reflect the evolving landscape of international education, prompting students to stay informed and adapt to the evolving visa regulations of their chosen study destinations.
