Gaa Shines Bright: Chef Garima Arora’s Progressive Indian Restaurant Earns Second Michelin Star

In a historic moment for Bangkok’s culinary scene, Gaa, the innovative Indian restaurant led by Chef Garima Arora, has achieved a milestone by securing its second Michelin star. The prestigious recognition was announced as part of the Michelin Guide Thailand 2024 selection, solidifying Gaa’s position as a trailblazer in progressive Indian cuisine.

Chef Arora, born in Mumbai, had previously made headlines in 2018 when Gaa received its first Michelin star, marking her as the first Indian female chef to achieve this distinction. The restaurant’s tasting menu, a creative fusion of traditional Indian dishes with a modern twist, has continued to captivate diners and critics alike.

The news of the second Michelin star came as a surprise to Chef Arora and her team during the press conference at Capella Bangkok. While expecting to retain their first star, the announcement of the second star sparked excitement and congratulations from well-wishers. Chef Arora credited the achievement to her dedicated team, highlighting their hard work and commitment during her maternity leave.

Gaa’s journey from its initial Michelin recognition in 2018 to the recent accolade reflects a maturation process. The restaurant underwent a strategic move during the COVID-19 lockdown, transitioning to a more mature setting—an 80-year-old Thai house renovated to create a unique culinary space. Chef Arora sees this second Michelin star as a testament to Gaa’s growth, emphasizing a deeper embrace of Indian heritage and roots.

As Chef Arora balances her role as a new mother to seven-month-old Aham with her culinary leadership, she envisions introducing him to the intricacies of the restaurant business. The culinary prodigy hopes that her son will absorb the diverse cultural environment at Gaa, eventually becoming a part of the restaurant’s legacy.

In celebration of Gaa’s achievement, the Michelin Guide Thailand 2024 includes additional one and two-star entries, showcasing the vibrant diversity of the country’s culinary landscape.
