Duolingo Expands Language Learning Horizons: Telugu Speakers Can Now Learn English

US-based language learning app Duolingo is once again making strides in expanding its language offerings, this time by introducing a new course tailored for Indian users. The latest course enables users to learn English from Telugu, the fourth most spoken language in India, further enriching the platform’s array of Indian languages.

With the addition of Telugu, Duolingo now offers Indian users the opportunity to learn English through their native tongues, enhancing accessibility and effectiveness in language acquisition. This initiative follows the success of Duolingo’s existing courses catering to Hindi and Bengali speakers who are interested in mastering English, allowing them to overcome language barriers and unlock new possibilities.

The move to include Telugu in Duolingo’s language lineup is rooted in recognizing the language’s prominence and impact. Boasting nearly 96 million speakers globally, Telugu stands among the top 20 most spoken languages across the world. By extending its platform to accommodate Telugu speakers, Duolingo aims to provide a valuable resource for mastering English, enabling effective communication, and paving the way for expanded opportunities.

Karandeep Singh Kapany, the Country Marketing Manager for Duolingo India, expressed the company’s aspiration to empower Telugu speakers through this course. He highlighted that proficiency in English holds significant value for career advancement and accessing higher educational resources, a sentiment echoed by 90% of Telugu speakers according to a survey conducted by Duolingo in collaboration with YouGov.

The survey further unveiled that 81% of respondents believed that English proficiency not only boosts self-confidence but also fosters better engagement within English-speaking communities.

Duolingo has been a key player in facilitating language learning for users worldwide. Its innovative approach to teaching languages through interactive lessons, gamification, and personalized learning paths has garnered a dedicated user base. In India, Duolingo is tapping into a growing market, as evident from the substantial number of daily active users in the country.

With English, Hindi, French, Korean, and Spanish courses already popular among Indian users, the introduction of learning English from Telugu is a testament to Duolingo’s commitment to fostering inclusivity, empowerment, and improved access to global communication opportunities.
