Discovering the Enchanting Darjeeling Himalayan Railway: Awe-Inspiring Heritage Site of India

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as DHR, weaves its way between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal, India. Constructed between 1879 and 1881, this narrow-gauge railway spans approximately 88 kilometers (55 miles). As it ascends from around 100 meters (328 feet) above sea level in New Jalpaiguri, it gradually climbs to an impressive height of about 2,200 meters (7,218 feet) at Darjeeling. The engineering feat involves six zig-zags and five loops, ingeniously designed to surmount the challenging terrain and gain altitude gracefully.
Acknowledging its historical significance and engineering brilliance, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee included the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in its prestigious list during the 23rd session held in Marrakesh, Morocco, in 1999. Subsequently, two more railway lines were incorporated, and the collective site earned recognition as one of the mountain railways of India.
The DHR’s charm lies not only in its scenic route but also in the unique experiences it offers. While six diesel locomotives efficiently handle most of the regular service, daily tourist trains are a highlight, connecting Darjeeling to Ghum, which proudly boasts the title of India’s highest railway station. Additionally, the steam-hauled Red Panda service from Darjeeling to Kurseong adds a touch of nostalgia and romance to the journey.
History reveals that the railway’s inception in 1879 served the noble purpose of reducing haulage charges in the Darjeeling Hills, primarily driven by the commercial viability of tea exports. Initially known as the Darjeeling Steam Tramway Co., it was later rechristened the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Co. on September 15, 1881. The renowned Gillanders Arbuthnot & Co., based in Calcutta, managed its operations until October 20, 1948.
