In a historic moment, Abu Dhabi is all set to witness the inauguration of its first Hindu temple, the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 14. The temple, constructed on a sprawling 27-acre plot, will open its doors to the public on March 1.
Architectural Splendor:
The BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir showcases the unparalleled grandeur of the traditional Nagar style of architecture. Crafted with 1.80 lakh cubic feet of pink Rajasthan sandstone, 50,000 cubic feet of pristine white Italian marble, and 18 lakh bricks, the temple stands tall at 108 feet, crowned with seven shikhars (spires) representing each of the seven emirates of the UAE.
The architectural marvel includes meticulously crafted ghats and features of the holy rivers Ganga and Yamuna. The temple’s two central domes, ‘Dome of Harmony’ and ‘Dome of Peace,’ further add to its aesthetic appeal.
Cultural Hub:
Spread over 13.5 acres, the temple complex is not just a place of worship but a cultural hub. It includes a visitors’ centre, exhibitions, prayer halls, learning areas, sports facilities for children, a food court, thematic gardens, a book and gift shop, and various other amenities.
Shrines of Different Deities:
The temple houses seven shrines dedicated to different deities, reflecting the diversity of India. From Lord Ram and Lord Hanuman to Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva, each shrine is adorned with exquisite carvings depicting the life and teachings of their respective deities.
Eco-Friendly Structure:
In adherence to sustainable practices, the temple’s construction incorporates fly ash to reduce its carbon footprint. Around 150 sensors monitor the structure’s conditions, ensuring safety and longevity. The temple is an eco-friendly space, using nano tiles to maintain comfort in extreme weather conditions.
Accolades and Recognition:
Managed by the global community-based and volunteer-driven Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), the BAPS Hindu Mandir has garnered several accolades, including Best Mechanical Project of the Year 2019 and Best Interior Design Concept of the Year 2020.
The temple invites people of all faiths to explore and learn about Hindu culture and spirituality, promoting harmony and coexistence.
