Avoiding Baggage Woes: Baggage Handler Advises Against Ribbons on Suitcases

Tying ribbons to your suitcase to easily spot it at the conveyor belt might end up delaying the process for you. Here’s why.

Many seasoned travelers prefer not to check their bags to avoid delayed luggage arrival, issues in selecting their belongings, or the worry that their suitcase won’t arrive at their destination. However, those who need to check their bags often label their luggage with unique markers to streamline the baggage pickup process. Ironically, this well-intended tactic can sometimes slow down the loading of bags onto the baggage carousel.

It has become common for travelers to adorn their suitcases with bright ribbons, baggage tags, or other accents to distinguish them from the hundreds of other bags on the plane. Yet, this personalization strategy can have unintended consequences.

Baggage Handler’s Insights

John, a baggage handler at Dublin Airport, revealed that these baggage attachments can cause delays in the arrival of passengers’ suitcases. In a conversation with RSVP Live, he explained that people who tie ribbons on their bags to make them easier to recognize might actually interfere with the bag’s scanning process in the baggage hall. Although these additional items make it easier for travelers to identify their bags, they can be problematic for airport luggage scanners.

John clarified that if a bag cannot be scanned automatically due to these attachments, it may need to undergo manual processing. This could result in the bag missing its flight. He recommended travelers avoid using identifiers like ribbons and old travel stickers, as these can cause confusion during the scanning process. Removing outdated stickers is also advisable to prevent any scanning errors.

Additional Tips for Travelers

John also warned against packing marzipan, or almond sweet dough, inside suitcases. “Never include marzipan in your checked luggage. You’ll be called from the aircraft for a bag search, and your bag will be taken out since it has the same density as some explosives,” he cautioned.

Moreover, he suggested a simple tip to prevent luggage damage: raising the wheels on your suitcase before dropping it off. This can help minimize wear and tear during handling.

Airline Responsibilities

According to the Department of Transportation, airlines are responsible for repairing or compensating passengers for damaged luggage. This policy underscores the importance of proper packing and handling to avoid any inconvenience.
