Construction of Alternative Road to Pune Airport Begins in July, Facilitating International Flight Services

Pune, June 17, 2023: Pune airport is set to undergo significant developments with the commencement of construction on an alternative road in July. With an investment of approximately Rs 350 Crores, the runway at Pune airport is also being extended. Once the alternative road is completed, the existing road will be closed.

The objective behind these developments is to facilitate the launch of international flight services from Pune airport. To meet the necessary requirements, the Air Force is expanding the runways.

To prepare for the construction of the alternative road, several efforts have been put into place. This includes frequent meetings between senior officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Air Force, as well as site inspections and surveys. In a recent meeting held on Thursday, Air Force officers were present along with Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar and Additional Commissioner Vikas Dhakne.

A site inspection was conducted earlier in the week by Air Force officials, while municipal officials surveyed the location for the alternative road on Friday. A proposal for the construction of the alternative road will be prepared and submitted to the Ministry of Defence for approval.

The construction of the alternative road is expected to commence in July once permission is granted by the Ministry of Defence. Prior to that, the Air Force will invest three and a half crore rupees in extending the runway to accommodate larger aircraft, including international flights. The collaboration between the municipality and the Air Force aims to extend the runway at Pune airport.

“The extension of the airport runway will enable Pune to handle larger aircraft. The Air Force is investing in the runway extension, and PMC will begin construction of the alternative road from Pune airport to Lohegaon in July after receiving the necessary approvals,” stated Vikram Kumar, Municipal Commissioner.

The alternative road will be wider than the existing road, with a width of 20 meters. It will provide relief to residents commuting to and from Lohegaon by easing travel inconveniences.

Additionally, work on the “missing link road” connecting Viman Nagar to the airport is set to commence on June 25. This project aims to alleviate traffic congestion for passengers traveling along this route. The defence ministry has approved the allocation of 22 Gunthas of land from the Viman Nagar exit gate to the airport for the construction of this 100-meter road. The Commissioner expects the construction to be completed within 15 to 20 days.
