Expert Tips: How to Clean Your Refrigerator Water Line for Optimal Performance

Is your refrigerator failing to deliver the refreshing water and ice you crave? A dirty water line might be the culprit behind the unpleasant taste and compromised functionality. Fear not, as Asurion Experts are here to guide you through the process of cleaning your refrigerator’s water line efficiently and effectively.

Essential Tools for the Task: Before diving into the cleaning process, gather the following items:

  • A cleaning rag
  • A bucket
  • A 16-ounce bottle of distilled white vinegar
  • A plastic funnel
  • A screwdriver
  • Two clamps

Now, let’s embark on the journey to restore your refrigerator’s water line to its pristine state.

Step 1: Disconnect the Water Line Begin by unplugging your refrigerator and locating the water shut-off valve, typically situated on the wall behind the fridge. Once found, turn off the water supply to the refrigerator. Proceed to disconnect the water supply line from the back of the fridge, either by hand or with the aid of a screwdriver or pliers. Place the disconnected line in a bucket to capture any residual water.

Step 2: Clean the Water Dispenser and Reservoir After unplugging and disconnecting the water line, remove the bottom reservoir from the refrigerator and empty it of any remaining water. Sanitize the reservoir by rinsing it with a splash of white vinegar, followed by wiping down the water dispenser and spout with a vinegar-soaked rag. Allow the components to air dry before cleaning them with warm, soapy water to eliminate any vinegar residue.

Step 3: Flush the Refrigerator Lines Reconnect the reservoir to the refrigerator and attach a plastic funnel to the reservoir tube. Pour white vinegar down the tube to saturate it fully, ensuring to also treat any ice dispenser lines if applicable. Seal the tube ends with clamps to allow the vinegar to sit in the lines for 10 to 20 minutes, then unclamp and drain the remaining vinegar into a bucket.

Step 4: Rinse and Replace Flush the refrigerator lines thoroughly with water to remove any lingering vinegar. Reconnect the water supply, turn it on, and run water through the tubing until all traces of vinegar are eliminated. Discard the first few batches of ice to avoid any residual taste, and clean the ice tray with warm, soapy water before returning it to the freezer.

With your refrigerator’s water line now clean and refreshed, restore the water supply, plug in the refrigerator, and enjoy the revitalized water and ice it produces.
