Aadhaar Amendments: The Unmodifiable Details You Need to Know

Aadhaar, the 12-digit identification number issued by the Indian government, is a cornerstone for citizens accessing various services and benefits. While the Aadhaar system allows updates to several details, it’s essential for users to be aware that certain information can only be changed once, emphasizing the importance of accuracy during the initial registration process.

Among the details that can be updated multiple times, such as address changes due to relocation or work transfers, there are two critical pieces of information that demand meticulous attention—the date of birth and the name.

The date of birth, once entered, remains unchangeable. Instances have been reported where individuals input incorrect birth dates, leading to complications during school admissions and board exams. It is crucial to provide accurate information from the outset, as attempting to modify the date of birth on the Aadhaar card is not permitted after the initial update.

Similarly, the name, once registered, cannot be changed multiple times. Many individuals unintentionally use nicknames or initials during the Aadhaar application process, only to realize later that altering the name is a complex procedure. Maintaining consistency in the name across all official documents is essential to avoid issues related to discrepancies.

According to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), a single error in the name and date of birth is allowable, but repeated mistakes are not permitted. Nishu Shukla, the head of the Ghaziabad Aadhaar Seva Kendra under UIDAI, emphasized the complexity of the name and date of birth update process, urging individuals to exercise caution when providing these details.
