The Breakfast Beauty Quotient: Study Links Carbohydrate Choices to Facial Attractiveness

A recent study claims that your choice of breakfast may play a role in determining how attractive you appear to others. The research, conducted at the University of Montpellier, France, found a statistical link between the amount of carbohydrates consumed for breakfast and facial attractiveness, as rated by heterosexual individuals of the opposite sex.

Refined Carbohydrates and Facial Attractiveness

The study highlights that individuals who opt for high-glycaemic breakfasts, featuring refined carbohydrates known to elevate blood sugar levels, may receive lower facial attractiveness ratings. Refined carbohydrates, such as white flour, table sugar, and ingredients found in various packaged snacks, include foods like white bread, bagels, pastries, cookies, cakes, and certain cereals.

Impact of Chronic Consumption

Notably, chronic consumption of refined carbohydrates during breakfast and snacks is also associated with lower attractiveness ratings, regardless of factors like BMI and age. The study suggests that incorporating high-energy foods during these times is linked to higher attractiveness ratings.

Differences Between Genders

The research, conducted on 104 French male and female adults, observed differences between genders. For men, high-energy intake during afternoon snacking was associated with lower attractiveness ratings, while high-glycaemic intake was linked to higher ratings. The findings emphasize the complexity of the relationship between diet and perceived attractiveness.

Call for Further Research

Amandine Visine and colleagues emphasize the need for additional research with larger and more diverse sample sizes to deepen the understanding of how refined carbohydrates may be linked to attractiveness and other social traits. The study’s implications open avenues for exploring the connection between dietary choices and interpersonal perceptions.
