In a surprising turn of events, the Tamil Nadu government has imposed a ban on the sale of cotton candy due to the detection of the potentially harmful chemical ‘Rhodamine-B.’ Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, in an Instagram video appeal, highlighted the presence of toxic chemicals in cotton candy, urging parents and the public to exercise caution.
The ban was initiated after food safety officials in Puducherry identified the use of Rhodamine-B, a synthetic dye known for its vibrant pink-to-red color properties. This chemical is sometimes illegally employed as a cheaper food coloring agent, particularly in areas with lax food safety regulations.
The ban extends beyond Puducherry, with Tamil Nadu conducting raids on cotton candy vendors in popular locations like Marina Beach and Elliot Beach. Kerala State Health Minister, Veena George, has also announced similar inspections in Kerala, reflecting the widespread concern over the potential health risks associated with Rhodamine-B.
Known for its carcinogenic properties, Rhodamine-B can cause skin and eye irritation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and allergic reactions. Ingesting large quantities over a short period may lead to adverse effects on the liver and kidneys.
While the ban is in effect, cotton candy sellers are allowed to resume their sales once they obtain a quality certificate from the food safety department. Soundararajan stressed the importance of swift certification to ensure the safe resumption of business operations. Until then, the sale of cotton candy remains prohibited in Puducherry.
