Surge in Cold and Cough Cases in Pune Due to Inconsistent Weather

Pune, a city known for its diverse climate, has recently witnessed a notable increase in the number of cold and fever cases among its residents. Medical professionals attribute this surge to the unpredictable weather patterns characterized by irregular rains, cloudy skies, and fluctuating heat waves. While the city’s populace is accustomed to fluctuations, the current weather conditions have given rise to a variety of health issues, including common colds, coughs, and other ailments related to the changing climate.

Hospitals and medical centers, which were once accustomed to handling around 150-200 cases of cold, fever, cough, chills, and headaches per day, are now reporting nearly double the number of cases. This has raised concerns among healthcare experts, as the impact of these health issues extends across various age groups.

Notably, children and adolescents aged between 15 and 24 appear to be more vulnerable to falling ill due to the erratic climate shifts. Dr. Avinash Bhondwe, a medical professional, pointed out that sudden changes in weather can make youngsters susceptible to ailments like colds and coughs. He emphasized that these cases are viral in nature and not indicative of diseases like dengue. While there has been a decline in dengue and conjunctivitis cases, Dr. Bhondwe anticipates a reduction in viral cases as the weather stabilizes. He advised parents to ensure that children with viral infections stay home from school and rest for a period of 3-5 days. Following medical advice, taking medications on time, maintaining proper hygiene practices, and staying hydrated are essential to recovery.

Apart from respiratory issues, the irregular rainfall patterns have led to the accumulation of stagnant water, creating favorable conditions for mosquito breeding. Consequently, cases of mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue and chikungunya have also seen an uptick. The consumption of contaminated water and unhygienic food items has contributed to an increase in stomach-related problems.

To combat the surge in health issues, medical experts recommend several precautionary measures. First and foremost, individuals are encouraged to get vaccinated against the flu. Staying adequately hydrated by consuming ample water is essential to maintaining good health. Incorporating fresh foods rich in vitamins and proteins can boost the immune system and enhance overall wellbeing. Importantly, individuals should refrain from self-medicating and should seek proper medical advice before taking any medications.

As Pune grapples with the challenges posed by unpredictable weather, it is crucial for residents to prioritize their health and adopt preventive measures to safeguard against common ailments prevalent during these climate fluctuations.
