Ragi’s Dual Impact: A Boon for Diabetes, a Caution for Thyroid – Nutritionist Reveals

Nutritionist and dietitian Sejal has brought attention to the dual impact of Ragi, a nutrient-rich grain, through an Instagram video. In the post, she discusses how Ragi can be beneficial for diabetic patients while posing potential risks for those with thyroid issues.

Ragi’s low glycemic index and high fiber content make it a recommended choice for managing blood sugar levels in diabetes. However, Sejal advises caution for individuals dealing with thyroid problems, as Ragi is goitrogenic and may disrupt thyroid levels.

In the video caption, Ahuja explains, “Ragi, a goitrogenic food, has been shown to inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis in several ways, mostly by inhibiting iodine utilization. Thyroid patients should also not completely refrain from Ragi (can have it in moderation once in a while).”
