Nuts for Almonds? Proceed with Caution to Avoid These Side Effects

To shed light on the potential pitfalls of almond overdose, we consulted Dr. Leena Saju, Division Head Dietetics at Artemis Hospitals, Gurgaon. Here are eight side effects that could arise from consuming too many almonds:

  1. Allergic Reactions: Almonds can trigger allergies, leading to symptoms like itchiness, throat irritation, and even severe reactions such as anaphylaxis.
  2. Weight Gain: Excessive almond consumption, especially without regular exercise, can contribute to weight gain due to increased calorie intake.
  3. Interaction with Medications: Almonds contain manganese, and overconsumption may interfere with medications, affecting their efficacy.
  4. Vitamin E Overdose: Almonds are rich in vitamin E, and an excess intake, especially when combined with supplements, can lead to adverse effects.
  5. Digestive Issues: The high fiber content in almonds can cause digestive problems, including bloating and gas, if not accompanied by sufficient water intake.
  6. Decreased Nutrient Absorption: Almonds’ fiber may interfere with the absorption of minerals like calcium, magnesium, zinc, and iron.
  7. Kidney Stones: Almonds contain oxalates, and regular, excessive intake may contribute to the formation of kidney stones.
  8. Increased Toxins: Bitter almonds, in particular, contain higher levels of hydrocyanic acid (HCN), which, if consumed excessively, can lead to cyanide poisoning.

It’s important to note that the recommended daily intake of almonds, according to ICMR, is 7.5 to 10 mg per day. While almonds offer numerous health benefits, moderation is crucial. Consult with your dietician to determine the appropriate quantity for your individual needs.
