National Cancer Prevention Month: Lifestyle Changes to Mitigate Cancer Risks

As the United States observes National Cancer Prevention Month, the latest Cancer Progress Report from the American Association for Cancer Research sheds light on the fact that 4 out of 10 cancer cases in the country are associated with preventable risk factors. Dr. Jon Ebbert, the medical director of the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center, emphasizes the significance of lifestyle changes that can significantly decrease the risk of cancer.

The three major risk factors highlighted in the report are tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and obesity, all of which can be addressed through lifestyle modifications. Smoked tobacco, in particular, is strongly linked to cancer in various parts of the body, as it produces around 7,000 chemicals that can lead to cellular alterations and, subsequently, cancer.

Dr. Ebbert underscores the impact of smoking on the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight cancer cells. However, he emphasizes that it’s never too late to quit smoking, as the risk for cancer decreases over time after quitting.

Alcohol consumption is associated with increased risks of breast, head and neck, esophageal, and colorectal cancers. Dr. Ebbert notes that even at lower levels of consumption, there is a cancer risk, with heavier drinkers facing higher risks.

Additionally, excess body weight is identified as a significant risk factor for cancer. Dr. Ebbert explains that excess body weight increases estrogen and insulin, leading to higher rates of cellular division and inflammation, both known risk factors for cancer development.

While bariatric surgery has shown promise in reducing the risk of certain cancers, Dr. Ebbert encourages small, sustainable steps toward weight loss through diet, exercise, and new medications in the market.

As National Cancer Prevention Month continues, these insights underscore the importance of proactive lifestyle changes in mitigating cancer risks.
