Effective Strategies to Combat Dengue at the Workplace and During Travel

Mumbai, August 18, 2023: Dengue fever, a viral illness transmitted by mosquitoes, has become a growing concern globally, with its geographic reach expanding. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that nearly half of the world’s population is at risk of dengue, and the potential for a record number of cases is looming. As cases continue to rise, International SOS, a leading health and security services company, has observed a notable 15% increase in requests for dengue-related information and assistance in the first half of 2023 compared to the previous year. With this in mind, organizations are advised to take proactive measures to protect their workforce from the risks of dengue.

While dengue’s global impact is concerning, it is particularly prevalent in India, where the incidence of dengue has surged by a staggering 1312% since 1996. In the year 2022 alone, more than 233,251 cases were reported across 35 Indian states. Neighboring Bangladesh is also grappling with a rise in dengue cases due to prolonged periods of rain and flooding, which have extended the mosquito transmission season.

Dr. Vikram Vora, Medical Director for the Indian Subcontinent at International SOS, emphasizes the importance of widespread awareness about dengue and its prevention. He highlights that while many infected individuals experience mild symptoms, severe cases that require hospitalization can occur, and fatalities are not uncommon. The risk of severe dengue is heightened in those who have experienced past dengue infections. As of now, the primary preventive measure against dengue is to avoid mosquito bites, as an approved vaccine is not yet available in India. While some vaccines are undergoing clinical trials, the best current strategy against dengue is prevention.

To protect employees from dengue, organizations are advised to implement the following guidelines:

  1. Pre-Travel Planning: Before any travel, employees should receive thorough pre-travel health advice, including information about dengue risks, prevention measures, and access to healthcare at their destination.
  2. Mosquito Bite Prevention: Encourage employees to use insect repellent, wear protective clothing, and opt for accommodations with air conditioning and insect screens to minimize mosquito exposure.
  3. Environmental Control: Organizations operating in high-risk areas should take active measures to control mosquito populations, such as eliminating breeding sites and conducting regular inspections of work sites.
  4. Employee Education: Provide training and resources to raise employee awareness about dengue symptoms, prevention strategies, and how to respond if they suspect infection.
  5. Pre-Deployment Health Assessments: Ensure that employees undergoing travel receive comprehensive health assessments before deployment to identify potential risks and address any pre-existing health conditions.

As the prevalence of dengue continues to rise, taking proactive steps to educate, protect, and empower employees is crucial for minimizing the impact of this mosquito-borne disease. By following these strategies, organizations can contribute to the well-being and safety of their workforce, both at the workplace and during travel.
