Command Hospital Pune Achieves Milestone with Piezoelectric Bone Conduction Hearing Implants

Government Hospital Makes Breakthrough in Hearing Solutions, Pioneers Implant Procedure

The Department of Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) at Command Hospital (Southern Command) in Pune has achieved a significant milestone by conducting successful piezoelectric Bone Conduction Hearing Implants (BCI), marking a groundbreaking advancement in hearing solutions.

In a pioneering effort, Command Hospital Pune became the first government hospital in the country to procure and perform these implants, providing hope and improved quality of life to patients suffering from congenital external and middle ear anomalies, as well as those with Single Sided Deafness (SSD).

The ENT department at Command Hospital (Southern Command) has long been recognized as a leading Neurotology center within the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), offering advanced implantable hearing solutions to its patients. The piezoelectric bone conduction hearing implant system represents a breakthrough in implantable medical electronics, catering to patients with conductive loss, mixed hearing loss, and single-sided deafness.

Despite the challenges posed by the high cost of equipment, the hospital’s commitment to expanding access to innovative hearing solutions remains unwavering. The successful implantation of these devices underscores the hospital’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for its patients, particularly children and adults facing hearing disabilities.

The commendable achievement has garnered praise from top officials in the Armed Forces Medical Services, including DG Armed Forces Medical Services Lt Gen Daljit Singh and DGMS (Army) Lt Gen Arindam Chatterjee, who extended their congratulations to Command Hospital (Southern Command) and expressed confidence in its continued success.

Under the expert guidance of Lt Col (Dr) Rahul Kurkure, Neurotologist and Implant Surgeon, and the leadership of Col (Dr) Nitu Singh, Senior Advisor & HoD (ENT), Command Hospital Pune has demonstrated its commitment to excellence in healthcare. Led by Maj Gen B Nambiar, the hospital continues to uphold its reputation as a premier institute within the AFMS, recently honored with the prestigious “Raksha Mantri” trophy for its outstanding contributions to medical care.
