Indian Railways Announces Up to 25% Reduction in Train Ticket Prices, Including Vande Bharat

The Indian Railways has taken a significant step to make train travel more affordable for passengers by reducing fares of AC chair cars and executive classes of all trains, including Vande Bharat, as well as those with Anubhuti and Vistadome coaches. The fare reduction, ranging up to 25%, will be based on the occupancy of the train and competitive pricing with other modes of transport. This move aims to optimize the utilization of accommodation and enhance passenger affordability.

Discounted Fares for AC Seating Accommodation

As per a Railway Board order, the fare reduction scheme will be applicable to AC chair cars and executive classes of all trains offering AC seating accommodation, including Anubhuti and Vistadome coaches. The discount provided will be up to a maximum of 25% on the basic fare. Other charges such as reservation charges, superfast surcharges, and GST will be levied separately. The extent of the discount will depend on the occupancy levels in various classes.

Delegation of Authority and Occupancy Considerations

To ensure flexibility and efficient implementation of discounted fare schemes, the rail ministry has delegated powers to the principal chief commercial managers of railway zones. They will be responsible for introducing discounted fares in trains with AC seating, with the aim of optimizing accommodation utilization. The decision on the quantum of discount will consider trains with occupancy levels below 50% during the last 30 days, either for the entire journey or specific legs/sections.

Competitive Pricing and Implementation

The fares of competitive modes of transport will serve as the benchmark while determining the discount percentage. The discount can be provided for the first and/or last leg of the journey, intermediate sections, or the entire end-to-end journey, provided the occupancy remains below 50% in the specified leg/section. The discounted fare scheme will be implemented with immediate effect. However, no fare refunds will be applicable for passengers who have already booked their tickets.

Flexi Fare Applicability and Exemptions

In the case of trains where flexi fare is applicable in a particular class and the occupancy is poor, the scheme may initially be withdrawn to boost occupancy levels. It’s important to note that the discounted fare scheme will not be applicable to special trains introduced for holidays or festivals.

The Indian Railways’ decision to reduce train ticket prices, including those of Vande Bharat and trains with Anubhuti and Vistadome coaches, by up to 25% is a welcome move for passengers. This initiative aims to optimize accommodation utilization and enhance affordability, making train travel more accessible for all. With immediate implementation, the discounted fare scheme will benefit passengers while considering occupancy levels and competitive pricing with other modes of transport. This step by the Indian Railways demonstrates its commitment to passenger convenience and satisfaction.
