Government Extends Ban on SIMI for Five Years, Citing National Security Concerns

The Indian government has extended the ban on the Students’ Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) for another five years, invoking the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. A notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on January 29, 2024, formalized the extension of the ban, citing ongoing concerns related to terrorism and threats to national security.

Under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the state governments have been instructed to take necessary actions against SIMI and its members. District Collectors across the country have been notified to ensure compliance with the ban and initiate legal proceedings as required by law. Additionally, the government has directed the filing of affidavits detailing the tribunal proceedings and outcomes to be submitted for review.

The decision to extend the ban on SIMI follows a press release from the Ministry of Home Affairs on the same date, highlighting the organization’s involvement in activities detrimental to India’s sovereignty, security, and communal harmony. The government underscored SIMI’s continued engagement in terrorism-related activities, necessitating stringent measures to curb its operations.

The ban on SIMI, which was previously imposed in 2019, reflects the government’s commitment to combating terrorism and preserving national integrity. Over the years, numerous criminal cases have been registered against SIMI and its members under various legal provisions, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
