Prestigious Recognition: CSIR Announces 12 Winners of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awards

New Delhi: In anticipation of its upcoming foundation day, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has proudly announced the recipients of the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awards for the year 2022. These accolades are set to recognize the outstanding achievements of 12 young scientists from various corners of the country.

The distinguished awardees include:

1. Dipyaman Ganguli: An esteemed immunologist hailing from CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology in Kolkata.

2. Kanak Saha: A distinguished astrophysicist affiliated with the Pune-based Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics.

3. Kanishka Biswas: A notable researcher from the International Centre of Materials Science at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, located in Bengaluru.

The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awards are an annual recognition bestowed upon scientists under the age of 45. These awards not only honor their remarkable contributions but also come with a substantial prize of Rs 5 lakh along with a citation.

This announcement comes amid ongoing discussions and debates over the government’s plans to modify the National Science Awards.

Biological Sciences:

  • Amit Singh: Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology, Indian Institute of Science.
  • Arun Kumar Shukla: Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur.

Chemical Sciences:

  • Kanishka Biswas
  • T Govindaraju: Bio-organic Chemistry Laboratory, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research.

Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean, and Planetary Sciences:

  • Binoy Kumar Saikia: Coal and Energy Research Group, CSIR Northeast Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat.

Engineering Sciences:

  • Debdeep Mukhopadhyay: Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

Mathematical Sciences:

  • Anish Ghosh: Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.
  • Saket Saurabh: Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai.

Medical Sciences:

  • Dr. Jeemon Panniyammakal: Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology.
  • Rohit Srivastava: Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

Physical Sciences:

  • Kanak Saha

These awards, named in honor of the first Director General of CSIR, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, are traditionally announced on the institution’s foundation day, which falls on September 26th.
