IUCAA’s National Science Day Extravaganza: Open Campus Day Showcasing Scientific Marvels

On the upcoming National Science Day, falling on February 28, 2024, the Inter-university Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune is gearing up to host its annual Open Campus Day. This significant event serves as a platform for IUCAA to unveil the talents of its students and share their diverse activities with the public.

In a bid to make this year’s celebration even more impactful, IUCAA aims to spotlight its scientific accomplishments, introduce observing facilities to the public, and promote various outreach programs. The chosen theme for National Science Day 2024 at IUCAA is “Indigenous Technologies for Viksit Bharat.”

Professor R. Srianand, Director of IUCAA, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The Annual Open Day is one of the crucial events for IUCAA, where we present our various activities to the general public. This year, we are making special efforts to showcase IUCAA’s significant scientific achievements, highlight various observing facilities, and share our outreach efforts. I hope you will enjoy this experience!”

IUCAA has invested in existing facilities to provide resources for research in Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A) at Indian universities. Notable among these are the IUCAA Girawali observatory, the Southern African Large Telescope (world’s largest mirror dimension), AstroSat, and Aditya-L1.

Future initiatives include LIGO-India, Vera Rubin Observatory, Thirty Meter Telescope, Square Kilometer Array, among others. IUCAA invites everyone to explore these projects through engaging models and posters created by students.

The Open Campus Day will feature Scientist mascots, an Astro Treasure hunt, Ask a Scientist sessions, and various other attractions. Researchers, engineers, and staff are gearing up for an informative and exciting event with talks, posters, models, demos, and video shows focused on the theme.
