Randeep Hooda’s Immersive Tribute to Veer Savarkar: Locking Himself in Jail Cell for Biopic

Actor Randeep Hooda, known for his dedication to his craft, recently paid a poignant tribute to the iconic freedom fighter Veer Savarkar on his death anniversary.

Hooda, essaying the role of Savarkar in the upcoming biopic ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar,’ shared a glimpse into the depth of his commitment to the character.

The actor, taking a unique approach to understand Savarkar’s struggles, disclosed that he voluntarily locked himself inside a jail cell during the recce for the film. This symbolic act aimed to capture the essence of Savarkar’s long and arduous confinement, providing a poignant connection between the actor and the historical figure.

Sharing evocative pictures from the sets of ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ on Instagram, Randeep Hooda commemorated the punyatithi of Veer Savarkar. In his post, Hooda acknowledged Savarkar as a leader, fearless freedom fighter, writer, philosopher, and visionary, emphasizing his towering intellect and fierce courage that unsettled the British colonial rulers.

Expressing the gravity of Savarkar’s imprisonment, Hooda highlighted that the British, intimidated by his ideas, confined him to a cramped 7 by 11-foot jail cell in Kalapani for two lifetimes, totalling 50 years.

During the recce for the biopic, Hooda attempted to lock himself inside the same cell to experience, even briefly, the challenges Savarkar endured. Astonishingly, the actor confessed that he couldn’t endure being locked for even 20 minutes, whereas Savarkar faced 11 years of such confinement, often in solitary.

Randeep shared the post with a caption that read, “Today is the punyatithi of one of the greatest sons of Bharat Mata. Leader, Fearless Freedom Fighter, Writer, Philosopher & Visionary #SawatantryaVeerSavarkar. A man whose towering intellect and fierce courage scared the British so much that they locked him in this 7 by 11 foot jail in Kalapani for two lifetimes (50 years). During the recce on his biopic, I tried to lock myself inside this cell to feel what he must have gone through. I couldn’t stay locked for even 20 minutes where he was locked for 11 years often in solitary confinement…

In his caption, Hooda reflected on the unparalleled endurance of Veer Savarkar, who withstood cruelty and inhuman conditions during his imprisonment, yet managed to inspire and contribute significantly to the armed revolution.

The actor expressed admiration for Savarkar’s perseverance, emphasizing that his contributions remain unmatched, despite enduring vilification from anti-India forces for decades.

Notably, the biopic ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar,’ directed and co-written by Randeep Hooda, is poised to release on March 22, 2024.

The film, produced by Zee Studios, Anand Pandit, Randeep Hooda, Sandeep Singh, and Yogesh Rahar, promises to rewrite history by bringing the life of Veer Savarkar to the silver screen. The project aims to shed light on the significant yet often overlooked aspects of Savarkar’s journey as a freedom fighter, lawyer, and writer.

As ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ gears up for its release, audiences anticipate a compelling portrayal of an unsung hero of India’s struggle for independence. Hooda’s act of briefly experiencing incarceration symbolizes the actor’s profound connection with Savarkar’s legacy, adding a unique dimension to the forthcoming cinematic tribute.
