Is “The Marvels” Relying on Avengers Nostalgia to Compensate for Its Struggles?”

Marvel’s latest offering, “The Marvels,” is about to hit theaters worldwide. However, despite the MCU’s best efforts, the film’s fate may be sealed. In the absence of its star-studded cast due to a strike, Marvel resorted to a familiar trick, using Avengers references in the final trailer to generate excitement. But will this tactic be enough to rescue the movie from a disappointing opening weekend?

The Marvels’ Troubled Path

“The Marvels” faces several hurdles leading up to its release. With the actors’ strike, the film’s lead cast could not embark on a promotional tour. As the MCU’s first movie in a while, it’s struggling to capture the audience’s attention, and the final trailer employs a tactic that may not prove as effective as anticipated.

Anticipated Underperformance

“The Marvels” is anticipated to open with less than $70 million, marking the worst opening in MCU history. Ticket preorders trail behind even some less-successful DCEU films, such as “Black Adam” and “The Flash.” Despite the actors’ strike contributing to the challenges, the responsibility for the film’s fate falls squarely on Marvel’s shoulders.

The Avengers Trick

The final trailer for “The Marvels” leans heavily on nostalgia, dedicating the initial 30 seconds to the MCU’s glorious past. This includes scenes featuring Iron Man, Steve Rogers’s Cap, Nick Fury, and Captain Marvel. The trailer teases another massive threat that demands the collaboration of various heroes, including Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan.

However, the trailer’s focus on past Avengers members feels like a cheap trick. While the actors’ strike forces Marvel’s hand, the studio’s hypocrisy is evident. Throughout the MCU, Marvel carefully avoided Avengers references since “Endgame,” only to resort to them now to promote this movie.

Questionable Choices

The trailer also raises questions about Marvel’s choices in featuring male leads who have left the MCU. The promotion of a film that primarily features strong female characters, while showcasing male figures that some real-life individuals feel threatened by, is a puzzling move. The inclusion of Iron Man and Steve Rogers may not attract those who criticized earlier MCU TV shows.

The Issue of MCU Stories

Ultimately, the trailer’s reliance on Avengers references signifies that the MCU’s recent stories have not been as compelling as desired. Instead of highlighting recent successes, Marvel returns to “Endgame” for promotion. As fans eagerly anticipate the Multiverse Saga, the need for compelling storytelling remains.
