CSpace Launches: Kerala Unveils India’s First Government-Owned OTT Platform

In a groundbreaking move, Kerala has pioneered India’s inaugural government-owned Over-The-Top (OTT) platform, named ‘CSpace.’ Launched with the aim of delivering people-centric, meaningful infotainment, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the platform at Kairali Theatre on March 7, marking a significant milestone in the state’s foray into the digital entertainment sector.

CSpace: A Response to Challenges in the OTT Sector

Managed by the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC), CSpace addresses the imbalances and challenges in the OTT sector concerning content selection and dissemination. The platform emerges as a response to the evolving dynamics of digital entertainment, with a focus on providing curated content to the viewers.

According to Sri Shaji N Karun, renowned film director and KSFDC Chairman, CSpace aims to bring transparency and meaningful content to the forefront. A curator panel comprising 60 members, including eminent cultural personalities like Santosh Sivan, Benyamin, OV Usha, Shyamaprasad, Sunny Joseph, and Jeo Baby, has been constituted to evaluate and approve content based on artistic, cultural, and infotainment merit.

For the first phase, the curators have selected 42 films, encompassing 35 feature films, six documentaries, and one short film. Notably, films with accolades at National or State Awards and those showcased at major film festivals will also be featured on CSpace.

Transparency in Operations and Revenue Sharing

CSpace stands out with its commitment to transparency in operations and revenue sharing. Operating on a pay-per-view model, viewers can access feature films for Rs 75 and shorter content at a more affordable rate. Importantly, 50% of the amount charged goes directly to the content provider, promoting a fair and sustainable ecosystem.

Shri K V Abdul Malik, Managing Director of KSFDC, emphasized that the platform will address concerns of exhibitors and distributors by exclusively featuring films that have undergone theatrical releases. This strategic decision aims to alleviate the impact of producers directly releasing feature films on other OTT platforms.

In summary, CSpace marks a revolutionary step in the entertainment landscape, combining curated content, transparency, and fair revenue-sharing practices.
