On the fourth day of the esteemed Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav, the legendary Begum Parveen Sultana was bestowed with the prestigious ‘Vatsalabai Joshi Award.’ Instituted by the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal, this annual award recognizes artists who have made significant contributions to the realm of Indian classical music.
The award, comprising Rs 51,000 in cash and a commemorative memento, was presented to Begum Parveen Sultana, a veteran vocalist hailing from the illustrious Patiala Gharana. The ceremony took place at the Maharashtriya Mandal Krida Sankul in Mukund Nagar.
Established in 2007, the Vatsalabai Joshi Award holds special significance in the world of classical music, honoring those who have dedicated their lives to the art form. In her acceptance speech, Begum Parveen Sultana expressed her gratitude, reminiscing about her connections with the Joshi family.
“Bharat Ratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi was like an elder brother to me, and Vatsalabai was like my beloved sister-in-law. Being felicitated by an award in her name is a big achievement for me and gives me additional zest to work hard,” shared Begum Parveen Sultana.
She fondly recollected her time in Pune at the Joshi residence, where the warm hospitality of Vatsalabai extended beyond the musical realm. “Vatasalabai used to make Pohe for all of us to eat, and we used to musically respond to her delicious preparation saying, ‘Pohe sur mein bane hai’,” added the maestro.
