11 Years of “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani”: Unveiling Lesser-Known Facts

The iconic film “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani,” featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Kalki Koechlin, was released in 2013 and has since become a cultural touchstone in Bollywood. As we mark 11 years since its release, let’s dive into some lesser-known facts about this beloved film.

Box Office Success

“Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” was made on a budget of Rs 40 crores and became a massive hit at the box office, earning Rs 319.6 crores worldwide. The film’s commercial success established it as one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of its time.

On-Screen Reunion

This film marked the first collaboration between Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone after their widely publicized breakup. Although many know this, fewer realize it was only their second film together. Their first project was “Bachna Ae Haseeno” in 2008, which grossed Rs 61.57 crore worldwide and was among the top earners of that year.

Pre-Shoot Road Trip

To foster a sense of camaraderie among the cast, director Ayan Mukherjee arranged a road trip for Ranbir, Deepika, Kalki, and Aditya from Chandigarh to Manali. This journey was intended to build team spirit and enhance their on-screen chemistry, which clearly paid off in the final product.

Ranbir Kapoor’s Commitment

According to IMDb, Ranbir Kapoor didn’t even read the script before signing on to the movie. Ayan Mukherjee had crafted the lead role with Ranbir in mind, reflecting their strong professional rapport and Ranbir’s trust in Mukherjee’s vision.

Casting Choices

Interestingly, Deepika Padukone was not the first choice for the female lead. Initially, Katrina Kaif was considered for the role but opted to work on “Dhoom 3” instead. This decision led to Deepika being cast, a move that significantly contributed to the film’s success.

Similarly, Bobby Deol was initially offered the role of Taran Khanna, Aditi’s fiancé. However, due to scheduling conflicts with “Yamla Pagla Deewana 2,” he had to decline. The role eventually went to Kunaal Roy Kapur, Aditya Roy Kapur’s brother.

A Landmark Year for Deepika Padukone

The year 2013 was transformative for Deepika Padukone. Following her success in “Cocktail” in 2012, she delivered a series of hits starting with “Race 2,” followed by “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani,” “Chennai Express,” and “Ram-Leela.” Each of these films crossed the 100 crore mark at the box office. Additionally, Deepika won the Filmfare Best Actor Award for her performance in “Ram-Leela,” solidifying her status as a leading actress in Bollywood.

“Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” continues to be celebrated for its vibrant storytelling, memorable music, and the palpable chemistry between its lead actors. These lesser-known facts add another layer of appreciation for the film and the hard work that went into making it a timeless favorite.
