Uttar Pradesh Takes the Lead: AISHE 2021-22 Reveals State with Highest Number of Colleges in India

The recently released All India Survey for Higher Education (AISHE) 2021-22 by the Ministry of Education has identified Uttar Pradesh as the state with the highest number of colleges in India. This comprehensive survey provides valuable insights into the higher education landscape, revealing significant trends and statistics.

Key Findings:

  1. State Rankings: Uttar Pradesh secures the top position, with Maharashtra and Karnataka following closely in the number of colleges. The top 10 states also include Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana, and West Bengal.
  2. AISHE Survey Overview: Conducted since 2011, the AISHE survey covers all higher educational institutions in India, comprising 45,473 colleges affiliated with 328 universities.
  3. College Distribution: Among the 42,825 responding colleges, over 60% are general, 8.7% specialize in education, 6.1% are engineering and technology institutions, 4.3% focus on nursing, and 3.5% are medical colleges.
  4. Enrollment Figures: The total enrollment in higher education institutions across India reaches 4,32,68,181, distributed among universities, colleges, and standalone institutions.
  5. PG and PhD Programs: Out of the responding colleges, 14,197 offer postgraduate programs, and 1,063 have PhD enrollments, showcasing the diversity of academic offerings.
  6. Urban Districts: Bengaluru Urban district leads with the maximum number of colleges, followed by Jaipur, Hyderabad, Pune, and Prayagraj, highlighting regional concentrations of educational institutions.
  7. Enrollment Distribution: The survey estimates 96,38,345 students in universities and their constituent units, 3,14,59,092 in colleges, and 21,70,744 in stand-alone institutions.

The AISHE survey stands as a crucial tool for policymakers and institutions, providing insights into the education landscape. This data will aid in making informed decisions for the future of higher education in India.
