UPSC Mains Exam 2023: Guidelines and Tips for Success

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Main examination for the year 2023 is set to commence tomorrow, spanning five days from September 15 to 24, with two papers scheduled each day. Candidates aspiring to join the civil services who have successfully cleared the preliminary examinations are now gearing up for this crucial phase of the UPSC selection process.

Here are some important guidelines to follow for a smooth and successful UPSC Mains examination:

Guidelines:

  1. Timely Arrival: It is advisable to reach the examination center at least 30 minutes before the scheduled time. Please note that entry to the examination hall will be closed 10 minutes before the stipulated time, and latecomers will not be permitted.
  2. Essential Documents: Candidates must carry their designated Admit Card, along with a valid identity proof and passport-size photographs. Ensure that all these documents are in order before leaving for the exam center.
  3. Stationery Requirements: Bring along transparent water bottles with no text printed on them. Additionally, carry the necessary stationery required for the examination, including a black ballpoint pen for signing the attendance sheet.
  4. Prohibited Items: Electronic devices such as mobile phones, cameras, pen drives, or any Bluetooth-enabled device are strictly prohibited inside the examination hall. Candidates are allowed to wear only simple wristwatches; smartwatches or digital watches are not permitted.

Tips:

  1. Preparation: Ensure you have all the required study materials and essentials packed in your bag a day before the examination. This helps avoid last-minute hassles and ensures you are fully prepared.
  2. Punctuality: Plan your commute to the examination center with consideration for potential traffic delays. Arriving well in advance will help you start the exam with a calm and focused mind.
  3. Revision Strategy: Concentrate on revising important topics rather than attempting to learn new subjects right before the exam. Revisiting familiar content can boost your confidence.
  4. Time Management: Plan how you’ll allocate your time for each question based on your familiarity with the topic, understanding, required word limit, and your confidence to answer it. Before diving into the answers, take a few minutes to complete the attendance sheet.
  5. Presentation Matters: Write your answers neatly, clearly, and in a jargon-free manner. A well-structured response is easier for examiners to understand and evaluate.

The results of the UPSC Mains examination are expected to be released in December 2023. Subsequently, successful candidates will be called in for the interview round, bringing them one step closer to their dream of joining the civil services.
