UGC Unveils New Internship Guidelines to Boost Employability Skills

In a significant move to enhance the employability skills of undergraduate students, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced comprehensive internship guidelines. The guidelines, designed to bridge the gap between academia and industry, encourage higher education institutions (HEIs) to actively implement internship programs, fostering job readiness and a heightened interest in research.

The UGC’s directive emphasizes the establishment and utilization of Research and Development (R&D) Cells to coordinate and facilitate internships across various disciplines. The overarching goal is to equip students with competency, capability, professional working skills, expertise, and confidence.

In a letter addressed to vice-chancellors of universities and principals of colleges, the UGC stressed the significance of internships in providing invaluable learning experiences aligned with students’ interests. This initiative aligns with the transformative initiatives outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP), actively engaging students in practical aspects to improve overall employability.

The UGC envisions a robust system at the HEI level, facilitating opportunities for students to undertake internships with local industries, businesses, artists, craftspeople, and research internships with faculty and researchers. This approach aims to enhance the practical side of learning, contributing to the overall improvement of employability.

As part of the broader vision outlined in the NEP, the UGC commits to actively reviewing the implementation of these internship guidelines by universities and colleges. This review process underscores the UGC’s dedication to ensuring the effective incorporation of internships into academic frameworks, aligning with the evolving landscape of higher education in India.
