Modernizing Library Science: Overhaul of Librarianship Certificate Examination Syllabus

In a significant development for aspiring librarians, the syllabus for the Librarianship Certificate Examination is set to undergo a major overhaul after 28 years. Managed by the State Directorate of Libraries, this transformation, slated for implementation in the academic year 2025, heralds a new era in the assessment process for library professionals.

The decision to revise the syllabus and examination procedure comes from the Higher and Technical Education Department, reflecting a proactive response to the evolving landscape of library sciences. With the current syllabus dating back to 1996, the upcoming changes aim to align the examination with contemporary trends and requirements.

Scheduled to commence in 2025, the revamped curriculum will encompass a diverse range of subjects essential for modern librarianship. Key topics include the dynamics of libraries within society, advanced management strategies, classification and cataloging techniques, information tools and services, and the integration of cutting-edge library technologies.

A dedicated committee, led by the esteemed Library Director and composed of six members, undertook a comprehensive review of the existing syllabus. Their diligent efforts paved the way for substantive updates aimed at ensuring the examination remains relevant and effective in assessing candidates’ proficiency in library sciences.

One of the notable features of the revised syllabus is its emphasis on practical learning. By incorporating opportunities for work experience and project-based assessments, the examination seeks to foster hands-on skills development among candidates, preparing them for real-world challenges in library management.

In addition to content revisions, the examination schedule has been adjusted to better accommodate candidates’ needs. Previously held from June 1 to 10, the exams will now take place from June 21 to June 30, allowing participants ample time for thorough preparation and readiness.

Furthermore, recognizing the importance of providing candidates with opportunities for improvement, the updated procedure permits individuals up to three attempts to retake the examination in the event of initial failure, offering a pathway to success and professional advancement.
