Delhi University (DU) has been navigating a peculiar situation this admission season, with approximately 1,000 undergraduate seats still unclaimed out of the 71,000 initially offered. As the varsity administration grapples with this challenge, a new policy framework is in the works, aimed at accommodating these vacant seats.
Addressing the Vacant Seats
The situation, while not unique to DU, has prompted the university’s administration to devise an inclusive policy. This framework is expected to provide an equitable solution for students and colleges alike, and the official announcement is anticipated later today.
A Glimpse at the Numbers
In certain DU colleges, around 10% of the undergraduate seats have remained unoccupied even after three rounds of admissions. Some of the colleges facing this challenge include Acharya Narendra Dev College, Aditi Mahavidyalaya, Bhagini Nivedita College, Swami Shraddhanand College, Institute of Home Economics, and Bharati College.
The Admission Timeline
The admission process for the academic year 2023-24 at DU kicked off in June, spanning across undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD courses. The new academic session commenced on August 16, 2023, and since then, the university has been diligently working on finding solutions to ensure that students who aspire to join DU find a place in its diverse academic landscape.
In Nutshell
The forthcoming policy from Delhi University is expected to not only bridge the gap in terms of vacant seats but also streamline the admission process for those waiting to embark on their academic journeys at one of India’s most prestigious universities.
