In a forward-thinking initiative, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is laying the groundwork for a comprehensive policy focused on the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. This strategic move aims to equip students with the skills necessary for future job markets, fostering creativity, innovation, and adaptability. Officials familiar with the development disclosed that the plan was introduced during a CBSE Skill Education meeting in November last year.
During the meeting, it was agreed to form a committee comprising representatives from esteemed higher education institutions such as IITs, NITs, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, stakeholders from leading global AI industries, and officials from the CBSE. AI-powered startup representatives will also be integral members of this committee.
“The rapid evolution of AI is reshaping the world, presenting both opportunities and challenges for students and educators. As AI continues to impact various industries, it becomes crucial for students to develop a robust foundation in AI skills to thrive in future job markets,” states the minutes of the meeting.
The proposed committee is expected to be officially formed soon, commencing work on the comprehensive AI strategy for schools. The recommendations are anticipated to be submitted by the end of April 2024.
According to the meeting minutes, the committee will focus on developing AI skills among students, preparing them for the 21st-century job market. Additionally, it will strategize ways to enhance students’ learning outcomes through AI and digital creativity tools, emphasizing social inclusion by providing educational opportunities for students with disabilities.
The forthcoming policy will extend professional development opportunities for teachers and educators, along with establishing a roadmap for industry and academic partnerships. The strategies outlined by the committee will encompass both short-term and long-term goals, with specific targets set for achievement at the end of the first, third, and fifth years.
In taking this pioneering step, CBSE aims to shape a future-ready generation, adept in the application of AI, ensuring they remain competitive and agile in an ever-evolving job landscape.
