Mitra Shakti 2023: India-Sri Lanka Joint Military Exercise Kicks Off in Pune

In a display of collaborative military prowess, the ninth edition of the Joint Military exercise, “Exercise MITRA SHAKTI-2023,” has commenced in Aundh, Pune. Running from November 16th to 29th, 2023, this exercise brings together the Indian contingent, primarily comprising troops from the MARATHA LIGHT INFANTRY Regiment, and personnel from the Sri Lankan side, represented by the 53 Infantry Division. The exercise involves 120 Indian personnel and includes 15 from the Indian Air Force and five from the Sri Lankan Air Force.

The primary objective of Exercise MITRA SHAKTI-2023 is to collectively rehearse Sub Conventional operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The exercise’s scope extends to synchronizing joint responses during counter-terrorist operations, incorporating tactical actions such as raids, search and destroy missions, heliborne operations, and more. The curriculum also features Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR), combat reflex shooting, and Yoga.

The exercise will incorporate the utilization of Drones and Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems, alongside helicopters. Joint drills will focus on securing helipads and undertaking casualty evacuation during counter-terrorist operations. The collective efforts aim to enhance interoperability among troops, reduce risks to life and property, and prioritize the interests and agenda of the UN during peacekeeping operations.

Participants from both sides will engage in the exchange of views and practices on a broad spectrum of combat skills, facilitating mutual learning. The sharing of best practices is expected to elevate the level of defense cooperation between the Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army, fostering strong bilateral relations between the neighboring nations.
