Engineering Excellence: Commemorating 243 Years of the Corps of Engineers

In a solemn tribute to the indomitable spirit of the Corps of Engineers, the College of Military Engineering (CME) in Pune, along with serving and veteran sapper officers, celebrated the 243rd Corps of Engineers Day on November 18, 2023. The occasion was marked by a poignant ceremony of wreath-laying at the Southern Command War Memorial in Pune, where Lt Gen A K Ramesh, Commandant of CME, paid homage to the Bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice for the country.

Additionally, on November 17, 2023, a Special Sainik Sammelan was conducted by the Commandant, CME, bringing together all ranks of the College. During the gathering, Lt Gen A K Ramesh urged everyone to strive for professional competence and technical excellence, emphasizing the crucial role of effective Combat Engineering support in both peace and war.

The history of the Corps of Engineers dates back to the 18th century, with its official raising year recognized as 1780 when the senior-most group, The Madras Sappers, was established under the Madras Presidency. The Bengal Sappers and The Bombay Sappers were subsequently formed in their respective presidencies. The merging of these three Engineer Groups on November 18, 1932, gave birth to The Corps of Engineers, and this day is revered and celebrated as ‘The Corps of Engineers Day.’

Since its inception, the Corps of Engineers has played a commendable role in providing combat engineering support and undertaking infrastructure development for the three services. Beyond their military duties, the Sappers have contributed significantly to the nation’s achievements in sports and adventure activities. Moreover, they have been at the forefront of relief operations during natural or manmade calamities, showcasing their commitment to ‘Atmanirbharta’ and ‘Nation Building.’

The Corps of Engineers takes pride in its four pillars – Combat Engineers, Military Engineer Services, Border Roads Organisation, and Military Survey. These pillars stand as testaments to the outstanding professionalism exhibited in their respective domains, solidifying the Corps of Engineers’ legacy.
