Shree Mandira Parikrama: Devotees Await Opening at Shree Jagannatha Temple on January 17

In a momentous occasion, Shree Mandira Parikrama at Shree Jagannatha Temple in Puri is set to open its doors to devotees on January 17. This marks the successful completion of the first phase of the Temple Transformation Project, enhancing the spiritual experience for pilgrims. The 75-meter corridor around the Meghanada Pacheri, the temple’s outer compound wall, will be inaugurated, addressing space constraints faced by devotees during parikrama.

Details of the Event: The inauguration ceremony, dedicated to the nation by Chief Minister Shree Naveen Patnaik, commences on January 12 and concludes with Purnahuti Aarti and Puspanjali on January 17. Gajapati Maharaj Shri Dibyasingha Deb will play a key role as the Karta for the ceremony. Notable attendees include Vedanga pandits chanting mantras at four dwaras (temple gates), with Shankaracharya Nischalananda Saraswati as a special guest at the yajna.

Temple Transformation Project Highlights:

  • Architectural Marvel: The project, with a budget of Rs 800 crore, features Kalingan Architectural style, using Khondalite stone, matching the Shree Jagannatha Temple.
  • Enhanced Devotee Experience: The Pradakshina paths around the Meghanada Pacheri provide a clear view during circumambulation, and an inner parikrama, garden, and outer parikrama offer peaceful prayer spaces.
  • Safety and Security: A 75-meter buffer around the temple enhances safety and security while accommodating large gatherings for important rituals like Suna Besha.
  • Revamped Travel Route: A new route from Puri Bypass road to Trumpet Bridge to Shree Setu to JBPC reduces travel time to just 10 minutes.

Inauguration Events and Initiatives: To encourage widespread participation, awareness initiatives at block and panchayat levels begin on January 5. The government plans to facilitate the daily visit of 10,000 pilgrims from the state to the temple starting from January 18, with a total budget of Rs 20 crore. Special events during the inaugural period include Gotipua, Sankirtan, Odissi Dance, exhibitions at JBPC, and cultural showcases to highlight the temple’s history and Odisha’s cultural heritage.

Cultural Significance and Legacy Preservation: As part of the Temple Transformation project, the cultural significance of Shree Jagannatha Mandira is honored through the aesthetic redevelopment of surrounding maths and temples in the Kalinga style of architecture. The renovation extends to around 10,000 worship sites throughout the state, preserving cultural legacies and enhancing spiritual ambience.
