Symbiosis Student Injured in Alleged Acid Attack, Pune Police Launch Probe

Unidentified Assailant Throws Chemical Substance at MBA Student in Hostel Room

Pune News: A 24-year-old student pursuing an MBA course at Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies in Pune sustained chemical burns in an alleged acid attack that occurred in his hostel room. The incident, which took place around 9 pm on March 23, has prompted swift action from the authorities as the police launch an investigation into the disturbing assault.

According to reports, the victim, hailing from Odisha, was asleep in his hostel room located in the Range Hills area when an unknown assailant entered and threw a chemical substance at him. The victim sustained burns on his hand and back as a result of the attack. Shockingly, the assailant reportedly locked the victim inside the room, exacerbating his ordeal.

The victim filed a complaint two days after the incident, prompting the initiation of an FIR and police investigation. Senior Inspector Girish Dighavkar of Khadki police station confirmed the registration of the case as a medico-legal matter following the victim’s hospitalization.

Initial inquiries revealed that the victim’s two roommates were absent during the incident, facilitating the assailant’s access to the room. The suspect allegedly used a plastic mug from the victim’s washroom to carry out the attack. Despite his injuries, the resilient student managed to appear for an ongoing exam the following day.

The absence of CCTV cameras on the fourth floor, where the incident occurred, has posed challenges in identifying the suspect. However, the police are diligently interviewing individuals present on the hostel campus during the time of the attack. Samples of the chemical substance used in the assault have been sent for forensic analysis, indicating its acidic nature.

Dr. Vidya Yeravadekar, Pro Chancellor of Symbiosis International (Deemed University), assured cooperation with the police investigation, stating that the institute is conducting its own inquiry into the matter. With most students away for Holi celebrations at the time, the authorities have questioned those present in the hostel during the incident as part of the ongoing investigation.
