Pune: Tragic Collision Claims the Life of a Chinkara in Indapur Taluka: Calls for Increased Wildlife Protection

Pune: Indapur taluka witnessed an unfortunate incident on Saturday, the 22nd of July, as a one-and-a-half-year-old female deer of the Chinkara breed lost its life in a fatal collision with an unidentified vehicle. The unfortunate incident occurred on the Nimgaon Ketki-Loni Deokar road in the area of Kauthali forest. The road leading to Loni Deokar Industrial Estate remains persistently busy, and this tragic accident has shed light on the need for enhanced wildlife protection measures.

The Chinkara, while attempting to cross the road in the morning, was struck with tremendous force by the speeding vehicle, leading to its immediate demise. The villagers, who witnessed the unfortunate event, promptly attempted to inform the forest department about the incident. However, contacting the authorities proved challenging in the critical moment.

The Friends of Nature Club of Nimgaon acted swiftly upon learning about the distressing occurrence and rushed to the site. Unfortunately, by the time they arrived, the Chinkara had succumbed to its injuries. The lifeless body of the beautiful creature, which was a rare sight in itself, was subsequently taken to the Forest Department in Indapur for an autopsy.

Indapur taluka boasts a significant forest area, home to diverse wildlife, including various animals and birds. The incident has underscored the urgent need for prompt and dedicated wildlife rescue services in the region. The Friends of Nature Club has called upon the forest department to provide a dedicated ambulance service for the timely treatment of injured animals and birds in such situations.

In the wake of this tragic incident, the Friends of Nature Club has also demanded that a thorough investigation be conducted, and a case should be registered against the responsible driver. Alongside this, they have emphasized the importance of increasing patrolling activities in the forestry to deter such accidents in the future.

Furthermore, the Club has urged the authorities to install clear signage on both sides of the road, warning motorists about the possibility of encountering Chinkara and other wildlife on the road. Additionally, they have called for the installation of roadblocks along the road passing through the forestry, ensuring the safety of both the animals and the travelers.
