Pune: In a significant development, the proprietor of a placement agency located on Pune-Satara road, identified as Rafiur Irfanali Mondal, was apprehended late on Monday night on charges of cheating more than 70 individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Mondal allegedly duped them by promising odd jobs but failed to deliver on the commitments.

Senior Inspector Nandkumar Gaikwad of the Parvati police provided details of the case, stating, “Rafiur Irfanali Mondal of Dattawadi has been arrested. A majority of the victims are women. He charged each individual between Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000 but failed to secure them any placement. We have recorded statements from 15 women, and the process of recording statements from others is ongoing.”

The victims, predominantly women from impoverished backgrounds, initially sought assistance from local politicians before approaching the Parvati police to report the fraudulent activities of the placement agency. Subsequent to the complaints, a raid was conducted at Mondal’s agency, leading to his arrest.

Gaikwad elaborated on Mondal’s deceptive practices, stating, “He handed over fake joining letters supposedly from various facilities run by different e-commerce websites in Warje, Katraj, and other parts of the city. However, when the victims visited these facilities, the operators revealed that they had not issued any such letters.”
