Pune Sessions Court

Pune: The court awarded life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1.85 lakh to five persons who killed a police officer’s son twelve years back in a love triangle. Additional Sessions judge K.P. Nandedkar gave this verdict. The police officer’s family finally got justice.

Names of those sentenced have been identified as Praveen Dattatreya Chougule (25), Yashwant Ranchandra Khamkar (24) Anil Bahiru Ajgekar (21 ), Gotya alias Devendra Ashok Mane (20) and Ramesh Rangalya Devdurg (20) all the resident of Kolhapur.

The accused killed Prateek Pramod Jagtap (19) a resident of Dhanori on 26 September 2011 in Shikarpur Canal Road area. Prateek’s father was working in the State Intelligence Department (SID). A case was registered against the accused in Vishrantwadi police station.

Public Prosecutor Rajesh Kavediya handled the case. He pointed out to the court that this murder was done out of a love triangle. Taking cognizance of it, the court has also mentioned the term love triangle in the verdict.

In the order, the court has mentioned that an amount of Rs 1.50 lakh should be given as compensation to Prateek’s family out of the amount of fine. CDR (Call Detail Record) and TDR (Toll Detail Record) became important evidence to prove the crime. On the day of the incident, Praveen had called Prateek to meet him at the airport parking gate. He was kidnapped from there and strangled to death in a car. In order not to identify Prateek, the accused took his body to a nearby bush and set it on fire.

What led to murder

Soni (name changed) had an affair with Prateek. After learning about this at Prateek’s house, his wife went to Soni’s house and asked her to leave her son. So Soni ran away with Prateek to arrange a house marriage. They both started working part-time in a BPO.

Soni met Praveen there. After that Soni started living together with Praveen. So Praveen asked her for marriage. But she told Praveen that she was having an affair with Prateek. So Praveen had hatched a plan to kill Prateek with the help of his friends.

This is how the crime started

All the five accused had come to Pune from Ichalkaranji to commit the murder. During the investigation, the call records and location of all the five accused were found till Shikrapur. The vehicle of the accused was spotted at the toll booths on Ichalkaranji to Pune and Pune to Ichalkaranji route. This revealed their conspiracy. The location where the message was sent from Prateek’s mobile and the location of the main accused’s mobile was found to be the same. This led to crime.
