Pune Police Action: Two Constables Suspended for Obstructing Contractor’s Work on Prabhat Road

Pune, 17th June 2023: The Pune Police has suspended two constables, Nikhil Rajendra Shedge and Aqib Sattar Shaikh, from the Deccan Police Station, following their involvement in obstructing a contractor’s work on Prabhat Road in the Deccan Gymkhana area.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1) Sandeep Singh Gill issued the suspension order, stating that the actions of the constables have brought disrepute to the police force and displayed irresponsible behavior, warranting immediate action.

The incident took place last month when Constables Shedge and Shaikh were on patrol duty in the area. At around 1 am, a contractor was carrying out road work on Prabhat Street when the constables approached a hotel on the same road. They confiscated a mobile phone from one of the hotel workers and used it to make a call to the police control room.

The constables confronted the contractor, questioning his permission to work at midnight and demanding details about his work contract. They raised concerns about gravel on the road, citing potential safety hazards. In response, the contractor assured them that the gravel would be removed and even presented the tender documents as evidence. However, instead of resolving the issue, the constables took the contractor to the Deccan Gymkhana Police Station, effectively halting his work.

Following the incident, the contractor filed a complaint with senior police officers. A subsequent inquiry revealed that the call to the police control room was made using a mobile phone belonging to a hotel worker. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that Constables Shedge and Shaikh had used the worker’s phone to make the complaint without his knowledge. Based on these findings, DCP Gill ordered the immediate suspension of the two constables from the police force.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible conduct and unbiased enforcement within the police department. The Pune Police is committed to upholding the law and ensuring the smooth progress of public works without unnecessary hindrances. The suspension of the constables sends a strong message that any actions compromising the integrity and reputation of the police force will not be tolerated.

Moving forward, the Pune Police will continue to take appropriate measures to maintain discipline and accountability among its personnel, fostering a culture of professionalism and dedication to duty.
