Pune: Inmate undergoing treatment at Sassoon Hospital involved in drug smuggling; ANC seizes Mephedrone worth ₹2 crore

FIR registered against three people, 2 apprehended

PUNE: The ANC has seized Mephedrone worth ₹2 crore in the Sassoon Hospital area in the city. The police have registered an FIR against a notorious drug smuggler and two others and seized 1.071 kg Mephedrone worth ₹2.14 crore. The action was taken by ANC unit 2 on the night of September 30 near the compound of the statute of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar opposite the Sassoon Hospital.

An FIR has been registered against Subhash Janki Mandal (29), a resident of Dehu Road and hailing from Jharkhand, Lalit Anil Patil (34) and Rauf Rahim Shaikh (19), a resident of Tadiwala Road under sections 8(C), 22(C), and 29 of the NDPS Act at the Bund Garden police station.

PI Sunil Thopte of ANC unit 2 and policemen were patrolling in the limits of Pune station area on September 30 (Saturday). Police Constable Chetan Gaikwad got the information that one person is coming to sell drugs in the Sassoon Hospital area. The officials and policemen of ANC unit 2 laid a trap.

They saw that Subhash Mandal, carrying a sack was standing suspiciously near the bus stop adjacent to the compound of Dr Ambedkar’s statue. He was apprehended and 1.071 kg Mephedrone worth ₹2.14 crore was seized from him.

When the accused Subhash Mandal was quizzed, it became clear that the drug was given to him by an inmate of Yerawada Jail, Lalit Amil Patil, who is in Sassoon Hospital’s ward number 16 through hospital’s canteen employee Rauf Rahim Shaikh for sale. The police have seized the drug and registered an FIR against three persons at the Bund Garden police station.

The action was taken under the guidance of CP Ritesh Kumar, Joint CP Sandeep Karnik, Addl CP Ramnath Pokale, DCP Amol Zende, ACP Satish Govekar by PI Sunil Thopte of ANC unit 2, PSI Shubhangi Narke, PSI Digambar Chavan, policeman Chetan Gaikwad, ASI Shivaji Ghule, Santosh Deshpande, Sandip Jadhav, Prashant Bomdandi, Ravindra Rokde, Mayur Suryawanshi, Disha Khevalkar, Sahil Shaikh, Mahesh Salunke, Sandip Shelke, Yogesh Mandhre, Nitin Jagdale, Azim Shaikh, Yuvraj Kamble and Dinesh Bastewadi.
